Patient: Jolie Duggar

Anthem Resident, Surgeon and Dentist Help Jolie Smile Again

By: Karen Angelo

It shouldn’t hurt to smile, or eat, or talk, or kiss the ones you love. But for Anthem resident Jolie Dugger, it did. For years. Since her tooth enamel was weak, her teeth started to deteriorate. Then they just began to rot away and snap off. She would lose teeth daily. Estimates to repair the damage were in the thousands. Because her health insurance ran out, she couldn’t get the help she so desperately needed. Because money is tight, she couldn’t get the prescription medications she needed to ease the pain, so she bought what she could when she could over-the-counter to alleviate it, even if it was for just a little while.

Finally, Jolie’s 18-year-old daughter couldn’t take it anymore. She wrote a letter to the Arizona Republic, hoping someone, somewhere could help her mother feel better again. The Republic forwarded this letter to Freedom Way and a call went out to all the Anthem-based charities to see what, if anything, could be done to get Jolie the care and assistance she needed. Bob Andringa, Chair of Anthem Cares Through Service, was so touched by the story that he stepped in to see what he could do.

"I decided to explore pro bono help, encouraged by our experience with a dozen other Anthem business and professional people who stepped up the plate to meet others’ needs," Bob explained. "We discovered that Dr. Dorfman was the only oral surgeon in Anthem and that Dr. Wolf was known for his charitable work. Their offices are almost next to each other and both readily offered to help when asked."

This simple request, Jolie says, "helped save my life." She calls Andringa "Bob the Angel," because within days of Bob getting that letter from her daughter, Jolie was sitting in Dr. Frank Wolf’s chair at Majestic Dentistry in Anthem for an evaluation and exam.

"When I started in this profession, I made a commitment, and had a desire, to do philanthropic dentistry," Dr. Wolf stated. "When Bob called about Jolie, we were definitely interested to see what we could do to help her out."

During that initial exam, it was determined that all of her remaining teeth needed to be removed, that the gum and bone disease needed to be treated, and a full complement of teeth needed to be created to get Jolie back to her old self again. Dr. Wolf donated all of his services.

Jolie then went to see Dr. Brian Dorfman, DMD, MD, a Board Certified Dual Degree Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon at the Center for Oral and Facial Surgery at Anthem, who also offered to donate his services so Jolie would no longer suffer the excruciating pain she had been living with for six years. "When you see someone in your own community suffering the way Jolie was, I felt the care we could provide was totally warranted," he said. Dr. Dorfman removed 27 of Jolie’s teeth, trimmed the bones, removed infected tissue and reshaped her upper and lower jaw. When Jolie went back to see Dr. Dorfman for her post-op follow up, she said it was the first time she was able to smile in months.

Four weeks later, with her healing process complete, Jolie went back to Dr. Wolf to be fitted for her new teeth, which were also generously donated by someone who never met Jolie, but was also touched by her story: Leo Cavazos, a denture specialist with Absolute Dentures in Sun City. "It made me happy to make her happy," Leo said. "I want to help as many people as I can one smile at a time." Because of his donation, Jolie is now smiling all the time.

"Everyone has been so good to me and I am so grateful," Jolie said. She cried the first time she saw herself with her new teeth in Dr. Wolf’s office and her husband cried when she showed him her first real, big, beautiful smile in a long, long time.

All told, the work donated by Dr. Dorfman, Dr. Wolf and Leo Cavazos cost almost $13,000. Thanks to everyone’s thoughtfulness, generosity and sheer willingness to help someone in need, Jolie’s smile looks like a million bucks. "It feels better to smile," said Jolie. Truer words were never spoken.

Top 5 Foods to Prevent Bad Breath

Bad breath results from two key issues: oral hygiene and gastrointestinal health. Basically this means that breath odors originate not just inside the mouth but also from your digestive tract. The culprit in both cases is largely bacteria. If you have bad breath, you should first make sure you are eating right (getting a balanced diet of protein, carbs, lots of fruits and veggies and plenty of fluids to keep the GI tract healthy) and brushing and flossing after every meal. But that still doesn’t mean you might not be offending your friends and co-workers after lunch at the new Italian place. Here are some things you can ingest (or chew) that can help.

1.  Chew on this. Move over parsley, there are some new halitosis-fighting herbs in town. Coriander, spearmint, tarragon, eucalyptus, rosemary and cardamom are all good for fighting bad breath. You can chew on fresh herbs or make tonics by steeping them in hot water (as a tea). These herbs make an excellent digestive as well-doubling the benefits of ending a meal this way.
2.  Get some active culture. No, not Cirque du Soleil, but yogurt. A recent study found that a serving of yogurt each day reduces the level of odor-causing hydrogen sulfide in the mouth. Apparently it also cuts back on bacteria in the mouth. Plaque and gum disease were reduced in the study’s yogurt eaters as well. Plus, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) recommends getting enough vitamin D from yogurt, cheese and milk if you’re worried about halitosis because this vitamin creates an inhospitable environment for bacteria growth. Be sure to get the kind of yogurt with active cultures-not overly processed or sugar-added varieties.
3.  Crunchy types. Apples, carrots, celery-basically any fiber-rich fruit or vegetable is your friend when it comes to fighting halitosis. Inside your mouth, plaque build-up causes odors. Eating foods that increase saliva production keep the mouth moist-and rinsed out. Also, many carbs and proteins can get stuck in your teeth-even healthy foods like whole grain cereal or chicken breast. So follow a meal with a Granny Smith (feel the saliva kick in at the mention of it?) to cleanse the mouth.
4.  Masking techniques. Sugarless gum shouldn’t replace brushing your teeth after a meal, but in a pinch it can freshen breath (masking odors) and is another way to increase saliva production to rinse away plaque and bacteria. Mints can mask as well, but only briefly-and go for sugarless. Sugar creates plaque, and no one wants a mint that makes breath worse.
5.  High C’s. Eating berries, citrus fruits, melons and other vitamin C-rich foods create an inhospitable environment for bacteria growth. A diet rich in vitamin C is also is important for preventing gum disease and gingivitis-both major causes of halitosis.

Oral Cancer – Alarming Statistics

Did you know one American dies of oral cancer almost every hour of the day? Approximately 35,310 people in the US will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer in 2009.

Over 40% of those diagnosed will die within five years – National Cancer Institute.

The high mortality rate associated with oral cancer is due to late stage diagnosis. This is the third year in a row in which there has been an increase in the rate of occurrence. In 2007 there was a major jump of over 11% in that single year. The death rate in the United States is higher than that of cancers which we hear about routinely such as breast, cervical, Hodgkin’s, prostate, liver, testes, kidney, thyroid and colon.

The incidence rate for oral cancer is 3 TIMES GREATER than cervical cancer in the US.

Exposure to the HPV-16 virus (human papilloma virus) is the fasted growing risk factor for oral cancer.

The mortality rate associated with oral cancer has not improved significantly in the last 40 years.

90% of oral cancer occurs in patients 45 years or older, which encompasses "all" 84M Baby Boomers.

An estimated 7,550 oral cancer patients died in 2007 (5180 men 2370 women).

Men above the age of 45 and elderly patients have the highest risk of developing oral cancer.

Men of African ancestry have an especially high risk in every age group. 90% of oral cancers are "Squamous Cell Carcinomas".

Those who smoke and drink, have a 15 times greater risk of developing oral cancer than others.

Oral Cancer Screening is essential to protect your health: this disease is treatable if detected early. At Majestic Dentistry, we offer every patient a quick, easy and affordable oral cancer screening, using the latest laser technology.

Our Patient Showcase

Patient: Tupper Jones

Dr. Wolf:   Tupper, you’re an Independent Associate of Pre-Paid Legal Services. What is Pre-Paid Legal Services?
Tupper Jones:   Think of Pre-Paid Legal Services like an insurance that protects two of your most valuable assets: Your IDENTITY and your LEGAL RIGHTS! These services are provided by a 36 year old NYSE company with a nationwide network of high quality law firms and the #1 forensic investigators in the world to restore people’s stolen identities.
Dr. Wolf: What are some of the benefits of becoming a member of Pre-paid Legal Services?
Tupper Jones: Surprisingly inexpensive access to top law firms across the United States. For example, we have telephone consultations, letters and phone calls on our behalf, contract reviews and most important, your will to protect your family and your estate– as well as lawsuit and tragic accident protection and much more. One feature that I really like is our Legal Shield that provides 24/7 emergency access.
Dr. Wolf: Identity theft is becoming more rampant in our society. Why is it better to protect your identity before something bad happens?
Tupper Jones: Identity theft is not well understood in our society. In addition to financial identity theft, identity thieves can commit crimes, have medical procedures – drugs and operations, drive automobiles while drunk or on drugs and work at a job… all in your name. The consequences to victims are life-damaging and may take years to resolve. Our plan includes complete identity restoration.
Dr. Wolf: I understand that most people can go into their own home-based business as an Associate of Pre-paid Legal Services and derive residual income that can be passed on to their family members. Can you briefly describe how that works?
Tupper Jones: Pre-Paid Legal actually has several kinds of income:

  1. Income from direct sales – sales that the associate makes, paid in a one year advanced commission.
  2. Override income – overrides from sales others make in your organization. This is like being a “broker” and works the same way as an insurance broker overriding the sales of the insurance agents.
  3. Residual income – After the initial one year advanced commission debits out, the associate keeps getting paid year after year for the life of each membership.

Since the business is actually owned by the associate – it’s inheritable… so the residual and override income keeps paying your estate year after year! For those who want to build financial security – and help people protect their families… this could be a good choice.

Dr. Wolf: What’s the easiest way our patients can get more information about Pre-Paid Legal Services and/or starting their own at-home business that pays residual income for life?
Tupper Jones: Give me a call at 623-910-6474 for an appointment. Since many of the concepts of access to the legal system and identity theft protection are misunderstood – my favorite way to introduce Pre-Paid Legal is to sit down with people to discuss it – and bring perspective to it and answer their questions.

We also have DVD’s, magazines, professional business briefings and luncheons in Phoenix and across the country – and of course, they can visit my website at www.TupperJones.com.

Dr. Wolf: Compared to other dental offices you’ve been to, how would you describe your experience at Majestic Dentistry?
Tupper Jones: Dr. Wolf, you and your staff at Majestic Dentistry have a more personal touch and you’re very interested in your patients. First of all – your expertise and use of technology is among the best. But also, I really appreciate your follow up phone calls to make sure everything is alright after a dental visit.
Dr. Wolf: How has your life changed since you’ve been a patient at Majestic Dentistry?
Tupper Jones: I am taking better care of my teeth and gums. I neglected my teeth in terms of regular dental care for several years… but with your help and patience with me, I am getting my teeth back to better oral health. But also important, I feel I have developed a valuable friendship with you and your wife, Annette.
Dr. Wolf: What would you say to a person who is thinking about choosing a new dentist?
Tupper Jones: If you want a dentist who is an expert in dentistry – and also cares very much about all of his patients, both in their dental health and in keeping them in touch with other valuable services that can help them in their lives… go to Dr. Wolf without delay!
Dr. Wolf: Thank you Tupper, I appreciate you and I really appreciate all the benefits I get from being one of your clients.

Val & Sherry’s Hygiene Happenings

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month

The American Dental Association has designated February as National Children’s Dental Health Month. It’s unfortunate that many American children do not receive adequate dental care. Tooth decay is the most prevalent chronic childhood disease.* Many children do not visit the dentist regularly and over 51 million hours of school are lost each year due to dental problems.* It’s a great time of year to think about your children’s oral health and schedule their regular dental visits for 2009.

Kids Health Tips

Children learn best by example! Have your child watch you brush and floss your teeth.  You will be showing them that you value oral care.  Below are some other oral health tips for children, small and large.

Babies

  • Bedtime bottles should only contain water. Milk, formula and juice all have sugars that work on the tooth surface overnight, inviting decay.
  • Don’t neglect cavities in baby teeth, even though they are not permanent. Early cavities can cause pain and are a predictor of future oral health problems.

Toddlers

  • Learn to spit. (Toothpaste, that is.) Children should brush with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, and are ready for fluoride once they have learned how to spit after brushing.
  • Sippy cups – The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry now recommends that sippy cups contain only water unless it is mealtime. Just as with bottles, sipping sugary juices or milk over time prolongs exposure to the teeth.
  • Another caution: be sure that children never walk while sipping. If they take a tumble, the cup mouthpiece can injure the mouth or teeth.

Young Children

  • Supervise children when they brush their teeth and as they learn to floss.  Willingness aside, they might not have the manual dexterity to do a thorough job until they are 6 – 8 years old. Coaching goes a long way toward setting healthy habits that last a lifetime.

Older Kids and Teens

  • Mouthguards are recommended for many activities, not just contact sports. Ask your dental professional which kind is best, and make sure that the coaches reinforce mouthguard use during all practices and games.
  • Gum with xylitol. Sugarless gum is a good choice for those who chew because it increases saliva flow, helping to prevent cavities.  Gum sweetened with xylitol is preferred because this natural sweetener (from birch trees) also has antibacterial properties that help protect against decay.
  • Orthodontics – fluoride rinse provides extra protection for children with braces and helps clean hard-to-reach places.
  • moking – It’s worth talking to teens about the oral health problems that smoking brings – bad breath, stained teeth, receding gums, mouth sores and even wrinkles from puffing. Not very glamorous.
  • Smokeless tobacco also called "chew" "plugs" or "dip" is not a safe alternative to cigarettes.  It has more nicotine and can be a very addictive habit – nationwide, more than 1 in 7 high school boys use some form of smokeless tobacco (American Cancer Society). It can cause mouth sores, oral and pancreatic cancer, bone deterioration, tooth loss, staining and bad breath.
  • Oral Piercings – Tongue or lip piercings are magnets for infection, pain and swelling. "Mouth jewelry" can chip or crack teeth or damage fillings. And excessive drooling? Definitely uncool.

Patient: Aaron Kerth
Business: Insurance Agent Liberty Mutual

Dr. Wolf:   What inspired you to choose a career selling insurance?
Aaron: My desire to help people live a safer and more secure life
Dr. Wolf: What’s the single-most important thing a person can do to save money on their insurance?
Aaron: Have a review with their insurance agent and compare their policies with different insurance companies.
Dr. Wolf: What’s the most rewarding part of your business?
Aaron: Helping people by educating them on how insurance can best work for them and their specific needs.
Dr. Wolf: What’s the easiest way our patients can get more information about their current insurance coverage and saving money?
Aaron: They can receive a complimentary insurance review with me by calling 602-300-7749. There is absolutely no obligation. Just have them mention Majestic Dentistry when they call and they’ll receive a special gift in addition to the their free insurance review.
Dr. Wolf: Compared to other dental offices you’ve been to, how would you describe your experience at Majestic Dentistry?
Aaron: Awesome! The atmosphere in your office is very positive and you provide a very high level of customer service.  Also, when I’m in your office I never have to wait. I’ve been to other dental offices where I’ve had an appointment at 8am and I don’t get to see anybody until 8:30 or 9:00 and that’s frustrating because time is money. It’s also disrespectful.
Dr. Wolf: How has your life changed since you’ve been a patient at Majestic Dentistry?
Aaron: I’m more educated with regards to my health. I’ve never had a dentist check my mouth for oral cancer. Before coming to your office it never crossed my mind that oral cancer can be an issue. Now I know. If I ever move out of state, I’m going to make sure I go to a dentist that always checks my mouth for oral cancer. Also, having your hygienists educate me on the best ways I can keep my teeth and gums healthy has been very life-changing for me.
Dr. Wolf: What would you say to a person who is thinking about choosing a new dentist?
Aaron: To give Majestic Dentistry the opportunity to gain their business because I’m confident you would excel in meeting their dental needs and earn their business.
Dr. Wolf: Thank you Aaron. I appreciate you as a patient in our practice, my insurance agent and a friend.

Holiday Treats for Good Oral Health

Do you feel lost in the seasonal swirl of sugary treats?

Look for these foods on the holiday table for a simple form of dental defense, or pack them as healthy snacks.

Raisins

Have you heard it through the grapevine? Compounds found in raisins fight bacteria in the mouth that cause cavities and gum disease, according to researchers at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry. The phytochemicals (also known as antioxidants) in raisins protect the teeth against decay and gum disease. Choose natural raisins as a healthy snack, but avoid the sugared ones found in some breakfast cereals.

Cranberries

This holiday mainstay may help to prevent cavities. Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center found that cranberries smooth the surface of the tooth interfering with attachment of the bacteria that cause dental decay.

Cheese

Choose cheese for a dessert or between-meal snack. Beyond the nutritional benefits of calcium and protein, the enzymes in cheese help to neutralize the acids that attack teeth. Cheese also helps to increase saliva in the mouth. Saliva dilutes and helps to wash away acids in the mouth and thus contributes to remineralization (hardening) of the teeth.

Tea

In addition to its overall health benefits, research reports show that tea can support oral health.

One study showed that tea fights bad breath by inhibiting the growth of oral bacteria over a 48-hour period. Both black and green teas were shown to reduce the concentrations of sulfur compounds that result in bad breath.

In another laboratory test, green tea was shown to fight the bacteria that cause strep throat and dental decay.

For even more oral health benefits, try sweetening your tea with Xylitol. This natural, plant-based sweetener is low in calories, non-cariogenic (cavity causing) and low glycemic (good for diabetics).

Final Thoughts

On behalf of myself and everyone at Majestic Dentistry, we wish you and your family a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

And… every patient of your office will receive $15.00 off their first order by placing the word "Dentist" in the Coupon Code box prior to making their purchase. They can also call me personally at 623-551-5323.
Dr. Wolf: Wow! That’s very generous of you, Gina. I know my patients will appreciate that.  Compared to other dental offices you’ve been to, how would you describe your experience at Majestic Dentistry?
Gina Paluch: Excellent! I love your office and I’ve already referred two people. You’re very honest and you’re not selling me something I don’t need. Everyone in your office is so friendly.
Dr. Wolf: How has your life changed since you’ve been a patient at Majestic Dentistry?
Gina Paluch: I no longer have headaches because of my bite appliance and my jaw is so much more relaxed.
Dr. Wolf: What would you say to a person who was thinking about choosing a new dentist?
Gina Paluch: To try you out, because I’m confident they’d be very happy and satisfied with your care and service.
